There are many legends about Cossack Mamay in Ukraine. A lot of artists portrayed him in their works. More than three centuries have passed since then. The painting was popular in a variety of Ukrainian regions: Slobozhanschyna and Podillia, Polisia and Tavria… Mamay always carried his music instrument kobza, while his horse was grazing at the pasture nearby. The photographer Youry Bilak was traveling to the city of Shchastya, Luhansk region. He stopped midway at the military barracks and took a picture of Ihor, a soldier with oseledets [crest]. He looks like a real embodiment of Cossack Mamay, but modern and polite one, doesn’t he?

En Ukraine, multiples sont les interprétations faites sur la légende du cosaque Mamaï. De nombreux artistes anonymes l’ont peint au cours des âges. Depuis lors, plus de trois siècles se sont écoulés. Ce tableau fut très populaire en Ukraine Slobodienne, en Podolie, en Polésie et en Tauride… Le cosaque était toujours représenté avec sa “ko- bza”, instrument à cordes, et non loin de là, son cheval était en train de paître. Alors que Youry se rendait dans la ville de Chtchastia (qui signifi e “chance”), en route, il fi t halte dans une caserne, où parmi ces soldats, il aperçut Igor arborant sur son crâne un luxuriant toupet.
