The artistic genius of Van Gogh committed various tricks that brought him more pain. He cut off his ear for no apparent reason and painted a self-portrait afterwards. He soothed pain by smoking a pipe. Youry Bilak found a man at the frontline near Mari- upol who closely resembled the Dutch artist. Viktor, the person on the photograph, came from Rivne region in western Ukraine. In his civilian life, he was cultivating a garden, raising children and then his grandchildren. He rushed to Kyiv when the Euro- maidan (Revolution of Dignity) started in 2013 and later to war in eastern Ukraine to protect the future of his children, grandchildren and the whole of homeland. Viktor’s involvement in the revolution paved the way to a war. Many Ukrainians were captured and tortured by Russia-backed militants. The militants beat them and cut off limbs of some of the hostages. At the photograph, Viktor imitated such a prisoner whose ear was cut off by the militants. Similarly, a pipe soothes his pain.

Plus d’une fois, le génial Van Gogh, se comportait de façon fantasque, ce qui lui occasionnait des douleurs qu’il apaisait en fumant sa pipe, mais ce n’est pas à la suite d’un coup de tête qu’il a peint cet autoportrait, c’est après s’être tranché l’oreille au cours d’une querelle avec Gauguin. Youry Bilak a rencontré l’homme qui deviendra le héros de sa photographie sur le Maïdan à Kyiv (Kiev). Un an et demi plus tard, après lui avoir acheté du tabac, il l’a cherché et retrouvé sur le champ de bataille près de Marioupol. Viktor de la région de Rivne, horticulteur de son état, élevait ses enfants et veillait sur ses petits-enfants. Mais lorsque les manifestations ont commencé sur le Maïdan à Kyiv (Kiev), il s’y est rendu. De là, son chemin l’a mené à la guerre pour défendre ses enfants et petits-enfants et protéger l’Ukraine. Beaucoup d’Ukrainiens ont été faits prisonniers durant cette guerre et soumis à la torture. On les battait, on leur tranchait des parties de leur corps. Viktor a pris l’apparence d’un de ces prison- niers à qui l’on avait tranché l’oreille et dont la pipe calmait la douleur.
